Governor McDonnell Sends Letters to President Obama, Secretary Gates Opposing Proposed Closure of the U.S. Joint Forces Command
RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell has sent a pair of letters to President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates noting his strong opposition to the proposed closure of the U.S. Joint Forces Command in Suffolk and Norfolk announced last week. The Governor's letters were sent in coordination with letters sent by the members of Virginia's Congressional Delegation and the mayors of Suffolk, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. In his letter, Governor McDonnell asks President Obama to reject Secretary Gates' recommendation.
The Joint Forces Command is one of 10 full combatant commands; thousands of civilian and service member jobs are tied to the command.
